Dr. Millia Begum
Consultant Psychiatrist
I am a DHA-licensed and UK-trained Consultant Psychiatrist with over 23 years of expertise in Adult Psychiatry and therapy. I am a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) and registered with the General Medical Council (UK).
My journey began at the National Health Service (NHS) Scotland. Rather unusually, as a psychiatrist, I had a deep passion for helping my clients heal from adverse life experiences linked to their current symptoms. In 2002, I was one of the earliest clinicians trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) therapy, and I have used EMDR extensively for two decades for traumatised clients.
I offer end-to-end services (psychiatry and psychotherapy) for individuals over 16. This often minimises cross-communication issues, which tend to happen between professionals. Several clients prefer that I work therapeutically with them while managing medications. I aim to create a safe space for my clients to share their concerns confidentially and with respect for their pain and suffering. I want clients to feel that I am with them through the journey to wellness.
As I am holistic in my approach, and from this ethos, I am committed to the goal of minimum necessary medications (if required) and helping clients optimise their medication by devising comprehensive and tailored treatment plans.
I specialise in Complex Trauma, and my current main approach
is Internal Family Systems (IFS) https://www.firstpsychiatryclinic.ae/ifs-therapy/
I am a Level 3 IFS practitioner trained by several lead trainers, including the developer, Dr Richard Schwartz. Please visit my website for more information on this approach: https://milliabegum.ae/
I have published various research articles and book chapters and have been a speaker at renowned platforms such as BBC Scotland News and BBC radio programs.
