Frequently Asked Questions
General & Getting Started
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor trained to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and order lab tests. A psychologist has a degree and training in psychology, and provides talk therapy, but cannot prescribe medication in the UAE. At our Dubai clinic, our psychiatrists can refer you to the most suitable psychologist / therapist for your condition and circumstances. A psychotherapist may or may not be a psychologist.
When should I see a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist / therapist?
You should see a psychiatrist when your symptoms are moderate to severe, recurrent, persistent or interfering with daily life. For example, prolonged sadness, significant anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping for two weeks, or thoughts of self-harm. A psychiatrist can evaluate whether medication is appropriate alongside therapy. If you are already seeing a psychologist / therapist and not improving, a psychiatric consultation can provide a medical perspective, expand your treatment options, and help you get well more quickly.

Your First Visit
What happens during a first psychiatric consultation?
Your first consultation usually lasts 45 minutes. The psychiatrist will ask about your current symptoms, past mental health symptoms, medical history, medications, family mental health history, sleep and lifestyle. They may also ask about significant life events or stressors. Based on this assessment, the psychiatrist will diagnose your condition(s), and discuss a personalized treatment plan, which may include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or further diagnostic tests. Bring your Emirates ID (actual EID card), insurance details (if any), and a list of any current medications.
What questions will the psychiatrist ask me?
The psychiatrist will ask you what symptoms and problems you have, how long you have been experiencing symptoms, your mood and energy levels, sleep quality, appetite, concentration, activity levels, enjoyment of activities, and whether you have had thoughts of harming yourself. They will also ask about past mental health treatment, any family history of psychiatric conditions, and your use of alcohol or other substances. These questions help build an accurate clinical picture, to diagnose your conditions(s) and decide what treatment(s) are right for you.
How should I prepare for my first psychiatry appointment?
Write down your main symptoms and when they started. List all medications and supplements you are taking – bring the packaging if possible. Note any family history of mental health conditions. Think about what you hope to achieve from treatment. Bring your Emirates ID (actual EID card) and insurance details (if any). Being honest and open during the session, even about sensitive topics, helps the psychiatrist diagnose you correctly and give you the most effective care.
Treatment & Medication
Will psychiatric medication make me addicted?
Most psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics are not addictive. They do not produce a “high” or craving. A small group of medications called benzodiazepines can cause dependence if used continuously beyond a few weeks, which is why psychiatrists prescribe them only for short-term or occasional use. Your psychiatrist will always explain the risks and benefits of any medication before prescribing it and will monitor you throughout treatment.
How long will I need to take psychiatric medication?
The duration of psychiatric medication depends on your condition and how you respond. For a first episode of depression, treatment typically lasts six to twelve months after symptoms resolve. Chronic or recurring conditions may require longer maintenance. Your psychiatrist will review your progress regularly and will never keep you on medication longer than necessary. Stopping medication should always be done gradually under medical supervision, to avoid relapse or withdrawal effects.
What are the side effects of psychiatric medication?
Side-effects vary by medication type and do not always occur. Common ones include mild drowsiness, dry mouth, changes in appetite, or weight changes. Most side-effects settle within the first two weeks. Modern psychiatric medications have significantly improved side-effect and safety profiles, compared to older drugs. Your psychiatrist will recommend the medication(s) that are most suitable for you and have the least side effects for your condition, and will adjust the dose or switch medications if side effects are troublesome.
Can therapy alone treat depression, or do I need medication?
For mild depression and anxiety, psychology / therapy can be very effective on its own. For moderate depression and anxiety, a combination of medication and therapy is recommended and produces the best outcomes. Severe depression and anxiety require medication alone, until you are well enough to have therapy. Your psychiatrist will assess the severity of your depression and recommend the most appropriate approach. Some patients start with therapy and add medication if therapy does not work adequately. You are always part of the decision process.
What types of therapy are available at First Psychiatry Clinic (FPC)?
First Psychiatry Clinic (FPC) offers IFS and EMDR. We also have an Esketamine room. At the end of your assessment, your clinician will recommend the type of psychological therapy that best matches your condition and treatment goals. Our psychiatrists can refer you to the most suitable psychologist / therapist for your condition and circumstances.
Appointments & Logistics
Do you offer online or telehealth psychiatry appointments in Dubai?
Although virtual consultations are theoretically possible, the law in Dubai forbids the prescription of controlled or semi-controlled medication on the basis of online consultations.
It is therefore necessary to see the psychiatrist at the clinic.
Psychiatrists and clinics that are licensed for telehealth, can do assessments and reviews, provided they do not prescribe controlled or semi-controlled medication.
What should I do if I have a mental health emergency in Dubai?
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 998 (UAE ambulance) or attend Rashid Hospital 24/7 emergency department. Police (999) may also be helpful. For non-life-threatening crises, contact our clinic during working hours and we will arrange an urgent assessment.
